INTRODUCTION:

Traditionally, warehousing operations were thought about as pure cost center. This was due to the lack of practical implementation of scientific warehouse management. Today, the core strategic objective of a company is to achieve an optimum customer service level that guarantees the availability and responsiveness, while economically managing inventory and warehousing operations. Warehousing is the only mean to strategically support customization and high responsiveness, while inventory supports the availability. In order to achieve the high performing operations, trade-off decisions are necessary based on the nature of operations. Warehousing and Material Management are no more managed independently, rather than integrated within the business strategy and fully aligned with the corporate objectives.

The sciences of Operations Management and Operations research provide the scientific basis to achieve the optimum seamless business integration. The principles have been developed over a decade of supply chain research, education and consulting project experience.
