INTRODUCTION:

This course is designed to provide an overview of the operation & protection of urban and rural electrical distribution systems & electrical industrial systems. Starting with the fundamental principles of a three-phase electric power system, the course considers such matters as electrical equipments such as generators, transformers, switches, circuit breakers, & various electrical loads.

 

This course has been designed to give electrical operators, electricians, field technicians and engineers a better appreciation of the role played of electrical operation & electric protection. An understanding of correct operation & correct protection of power systems & industrial loads along with correct management will increase your plant efficiency and performance as well as increasing safety for all concerned.

 

This course will provide you with excellent knowledge of electrical operation & protection. You will also gain a better understanding of the possible problems & its solutions.

OBJECTIVES:

SIMPLE CALCULATION OF SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENTS

  • Revision of simple formulae
  • Calculation of short circuit MVA and fault currents

SYSTEM EARTHING

  • History, construction and characteristics

INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERS

  • Current transformers: construction, performance, specification and
  • magnetization curves
  • Voltage transformers: types, accuracy and connections

 

Day 7:

 

CIRCUIT BREAKERS

  • Purpose and duty, clearance times and types

 

TRIPPING BATTERIES

  • Battery types, chargers, maintenance and DC circuitry

 

RELAYS

  • Inverse Definite Minimum Time (IDMT) relay
  • Construction principles and setting
  • Calculation of settings – practical examples
  • New modern numerical relays and future trends

 

DAY 8:

 

CO-ORDINATION BY TIME GRADING

  • Problems in applying IDMT relays

 

TRANSFORMER PROTECTION

  • Phase shift, magnetizing in-rush, inter-turn, core and tank faults
  • Differential and restricted earth fault schemes
  • Bucholz relay, oil and winding temperature
  • Oil - testing and gas analysis

 

DAY 9:

 

SWITCHGEAR (BUSBAR) PROTECTION

  • Requirements, zones and types
  • Frame leakage
  • Reverse blocking
  • High, medium and low impedance schemes

 

DAY 10:

 

OVERHEAD LINE PROTECTION

  • Basic principles of the distance relay
  • Tripping characteristics
  • Application onto power lines
  • Effect of load current and arc resistance
  • Various schemes using power line carrier

 

MANAGEMENT OF PROTECTION

  • Routine and annual testing, investigation and performance assessment and upgrading
