The course targets the basic concepts of Circuit breakers, switch gears and protection as well as shunt and series fault analysis. The course shall cover zones of protection, relay types, over current relays construction, directional power relays, phase balance relays, impedance relays and merz price relays.

 The course also covers construction features and theory of operation of circuit breakers, breaking mediums, IEC standard tests of circuit breakers, Maintenance of HV and MV circuit breakers and 66/22 KV substation design and components. And some practical application of protection circuits for power system components and equipment

The course also includes over voltage wave forms, protection devices against over voltages, types of surge diverters and insulation level coordination



By the end of the course the trainee will:

  • Be familiar with basic concept of circuit breaker trip circuit
  • Be familiar with zones of protection determination concept
  • Know the difference between different types of relays based on construction
  • Know the theory of operation of attraction and induction over current relays
  • Know the theory of operation of directional power relay, phase balance relay and impedance relay

  • Know the IEEE type tests of high voltage circuit breakers
