INTRODUCTION:

 

If we take Logic to be the activity of drawing inferences (conclusions) from a body of information, then no doubt humans have been using logic for as long as they have been thinking, or at least consciously thinking.  Critical thinking, as the term is generally used these days, roughly means reasonable and reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do.  In doing such thinking, one is helped by the employment of a set of critical thinking dispositions and abilities that can serve as a set of comprehensive goals for a critical thinking curriculum and its assessment.  This course will introduce the critical thinking with emphasis on analyzing and constructing both inductive and deductive arguments.  Critical reasoning will be applied to a variety of situations, such as making sound decisions, evaluating claims and assertions and avoiding fallacious reasoning.

Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Matters

Understanding the importance of critical thinking and how it differs from other types of thinking (e.g. memorization) are the first steps to improving the HR way of thinking in decision making.  In this introductory lesson, participants will be introduced to six critical-thinking skills: interpretation, analysis, inference, explanation, evaluation, and self-regulation. So we will touch these points:

  • Are you a critical thinker?
  • What is critical thinking?
  • Why do we need critical thinking?
  • Developing as a critical thinker
  • Second-order thinking

 

Right Brain! Left Brain! Brain Sprain!: Understanding Your Preferred Approach

This unit begins with a brief introduction to the physiology of the brain and its impact on thinking.  Participants will discover the difference between right-brain and left-brain thinking and assess their preferred approach to processing information.
